When To Get Them Replaced & Why They're Important

The tension cables and springs on your garage door are crucial to your overhead door system. They’re two of the most important safety mechanisms in the whole system. Garage cables and springs work together to ensure the garage door can open and close effortlessly. The cables run through the torsion springs and hold the door’s weight while the springs do the lifting. The cables also ensure that the door doesn’t give out completely if the springs snap. Without either of these components, the overhead door could cause a fatal incident.

How-To Guide: Cables & Springs
Step 1: Release The Tension
The first step in cable and spring repair is releasing the tension from the cables. You will have to turn off the garage door opener.
Tip: You don’t want the door falling while you’re working on it. So, you have to clamp the door on both sides to make sure it’s secure. Using either locking pliers or a C-clamp, place them on the track’s sides just above one of the rollers so the door won’t come crashing down.
Step 2: Unhook The Springs
Next, you will unhook the springs and remove the faulty cable from them. Make sure you loosen the tension all the way. Otherwise, when you start removing the springs, serious injury could occur. It is best to remove the springs with a proper set of winding bars. You can purchase them from most online suppliers or your local hardware store.
When removing or attaching the springs, stay off to the side. Never position yourself directly in front when unwinding and winding. Just in case the spring pops off, you do not want to get hit. To remove the springs, you’ll need to remove the cable drum. To do so, start on the left, slide the torsion tube and move it to the right. Then, slide the drum off, making it accessible to remove the spring.
Step 3: Replace With New Cables & Springs
Always measure the springs’ inner diameter to make sure you’ve purchased the correct size replacement. Now that the old cables and springs are off, you will want to install the new cables. Followed by hooking the springs back into place. Use your winding tool again to get the springs back into place and wound tightly. Make sure to reattach carefully. If you don’t hook the springs in well, the door could come crashing down.
Next, feed the cables through the drum and rewind the cables up into place. Pull them as tight as possible to ensure there is no slack. You are going to want to get equal tension on both sides, so the door opens evenly.
Step 4: Test It
Once everything is back in place, you can test the garage door. Checking the tension springs and cables, remove the clamps and make sure the door stays in place. This is an excellent first sign. If the door falls when you remove the clamps tighten the springs a good quarter turn and vice versa if the door starts lifting on its own.
Once the door stays still after the clamps are removed, you can reconnect the opener and give it a test run. It should be smooth opening from here.
